Start Here

basilBLOGinc is the writing of Dr Basil Stathoulis — orthopaedic surgeon, Greek South African, traveller, chess player, and son. This page is a guide to the best of what lives here. Whether you arrived through a search, a shared link, or plain curiosity, this is where to begin.

Medicine & Nursing

Letters to Nurses is the most distinctive series on this blog — open letters from a surgeon to the nurses he works alongside. Twenty-two letters covering everything from burnout and staffing ratios to the quiet acts of courage that never make it into a report. Start with Broken, Breaking Point, and Another Stray Bullet.

My Father — Peter Stathoulis

The largest body of writing on this blog belongs to a project about my father. Conversations with My Father is a collection of 169 short memories — portraits of the people my father knew, written since his death in 2008. The Peter Stathoulis Archives house his speeches as a Greek community leader in South Africa from 1966 to 2008, preserved in English, Greek and Afrikaans.

Travel

My Travels covers over 36 dispatches from across the world, written in the belief my father held: that travel is the best education. On Trail is a smaller, more physical series — writing from the mountains and hiking routes of South Africa and beyond.

Chess

The Chess series contains stories from tournament play and garden games. Start with A Lucky Day of Chess and A Chess Garden is Born.

Essays & Poems

The Essays are longer pieces written mostly while travelling. The Poems are rarer, written when prose is not enough. The Costa Calla Chronicle is a travel journal in diary form.
